Why the Canadian gov needs to right their wrongs.

Jan 23, 2021 | Project

  • The Canadian government is perpetuating, not reversing the damage done from prohibition.
  • As a result, people continue to be incarcerated, and communities destroyed, especially poor and racialized ones,
  • Even now 250,000 Canadians are still penalized from previous minor non-violent cannabis offences.
  • The government is fighting hard to push out the illicit market, yet actively excluding those from the illicit market from participating.
  • Imagine fighting your whole life for legalization, only to be banned from participating in the legal market.
  • In 2019, only 38.2% of cannabis purchases were in the legal market.
  • And that’s no surprise.
  • Because an industry that excludes its leaders, advocates and experts, and puts barriers in front of racialized communities is not an industry that’s for the people.
  • It’s time for the Canadian government to admit that they were wrang and work to make it right.
